Mother’s Day Whitewater Races

This Mother's Day weekend saw the running of the 61st annual Mother's Day Races in Pilar, NM. The Class III whitewater stretch - The Racecourse (named for the race itself) - provides for 4.5 miles of waves, holes, and lots of rocks this year. 

The low snow pack (thanks La Nina) kept the flows at a meager 230 CFS during the race. Last year, with lots of snowfall and spring rains, the racecourse swelled to over 3,000 CFS. It was anybody's guess as to who would win in each division. There were downriver races for Kayak Long, Kayak Short, SUP, R4 and R6. There was also an all-vessel Slalom course this year. And of course, we can't forget the wonderful Dutch Oven Cook-off held the night before the races.

Racer's compete for bragging rights and first picks of the prize table. This year's sponsors did a great job with prizes for winners and donating items to the raffle. MST Adventures donated two WRSI Trident composite helmets to the raffle and three NRS co-pilot river knives for race winners.
