Spring Paddling River Hazards

What do you do when you see a tree in the water while your paddling? Often in the Rio Grande during snow melt we find trees in the river that have been undercut and have fallen into the water.

Most of the time there is a clear line around it, if you act swiftly. The best course of action is to act early and give it space. Signal to your friends who are upstream and let them know of the river hazard. Identify the safe way around the tree using river signals if necessary. Eddy out and walk around it if you can’t safely paddle around it.

If this all sounds new to you, maybe you should take a river oriented paddling class with MST. We will identify common hazards, teach you how to read the river and the currents, and help you establish safe practices for your next outing.
